About this Course & Target Audience
This is the 100% on-demand version of AAAP's 2021 Addictions and Their Treatment Course. This course was originally held with access to on-demand lectures prior to live Q&A sessions with faculty on Friday, October 1, 2021 and Saturday, October 2, 2021.

The field of Addiction changes frequently as new information becomes available. This course presents a broad-based overview of addictions and up-to-date information in the field of addiction.  It is recommended for physicians, PA-Cs, nurse practitioners, and other professionals who wish to stay updated on the most recent trends in the addiction field. It is equally relevant to junior faculty and clinicians as well as experienced practitioners and is intended to help psychiatrists prepare for ABPN certification and recertification examinations in Addiction Psychiatry.

Course Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe new advances in the pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of addictive disorders.
  2. Discuss the epidemiology of substance use disorders and their co-occurrence with other psychiatric disorders and review current recommended approaches for concurrent treatment of substance use disorders and other mental health disorders.
  3. Describe the role of genetics in the risk for developing alcohol and other drug use disorders.
  4. Identify the major neurobiological pathways involved in addictive disorders.
  5. Identify the molecular mechanisms that are altered following drug and alcohol use.
  6. Review the literature on screening and brief intervention effectiveness and teach this technique so it is applied.
  7. Review current treatment guidelines and how to utilize them in clinical practice.
  8. Describe special considerations for addiction diagnosis and treatment for women, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, youth, older adults, hospitalized patients, and patients with comorbid health conditions.
