Welcome to the Improving Clinical Practice with Patients who have Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD): Performance in Practice (PIP) and SA Activity

Target Audience: This activity will assist physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners and healthcare professionals to determine individual practice gaps and address them through a performance improvement plan designed to improve competence, performance, and patient outcomes.

Change Intended: As a result of this program, learners will determine individual practice gaps and address them through a performance improvement plan designed to improve competence, performance, and patient outcomes.

Educational Objectives:

  • Describe evidence-supported methods to screen for unhealthy alcohol use.
  • Assess patients’ alcohol use and identify at-risk use according to current guidelines.
  • Describe the elements of a brief intervention.
  • Identify evidence-supported first- and second-line medications for alcohol use disorder and compare their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Discuss the utility and limitations of available biomarkers of alcohol consumption.

Successful completion of this activity: You MUST COMPLETE all 3 stages to be awarded credit. Partial credit will not be awarded. 

The stages of this AUD PIP and SA activity: This PIP and SA activity follows the AMA-standardized three-stage process of a PI CME that includes:

  • Stage A - Assess: Assess your current practice against current evidence, expert consensus, and peers' practice; 
  • Stage B - Apply: Develop and follow your own improvement plan; 
  • Stage C - Evaluate: Reassess your practice to measure the effects of your improvement plan.


A minimum of 1 month must pass from the beginning to the final stage, but it is likely (and recommended) that the process will take 3-6 months.
