Motivational Interviewing (MI) Performance in Practice (PIP) and Self-Assessment (SA) Activity
Welcome to the Motivational Interviewing: Performance in Practice (PIP)  and Self-Assessment (SA) Activity.

We gratefully acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our faculty content developers in crafting this educational material: Carla Marienfeld, MD; Douglas Ziedonis, MD; Elizabeth Guevara, MD.

Target Audience:
This activity is designed to improve the competence, performance, and patient outcomes of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health care professionals treating substance use disorders (SUDs) who may utilize MI in the care of their patients, along with primary care/mental health practitioners seeking to motivate their patients to seek SUD treatment. Learners will determine individual practice gaps and address them through a performance improvement plan to assess and evaluate their performance in using Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques in their practices.

Our goal: The overall objective of this activity is to guide you through the process of self-evaluation using evidence-based clinical quality measures. Once practices are implemented as an everyday clinical function, it is expected that you will have achieved performance change in your practice setting.

Educational Objectives
Through participation in this Performance in Practice activity, including assessment of individual practice gaps, development of a personal improvement plan, and re-evaluation following implementation, clinicians will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased competence in assessing patient readiness and engaging patients to establish a therapeutic alliance.
  • Demonstrate the ability to move from broad engagement to a specific target(s) for change and document a clear, shared beahvioral focus while respecting patient autonomy.
  • Improve documentation and utilization of patients' own values, motivations, goals, and reasons for change in order to promote behavioral change.
  • Demonstrate the ability to transition the conversation about making a change to planning for making a change by collaboratively developing SMART goals that address specific clinical targets.
  • Implement strategies for continuous skill development through the use of standardized clinical quality measures, peer-review, or self-coding of clinical encounters to monitor MI fidelity.
Core Competencies as a result of participating in this continuing education activity:
  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication
  • Patient Care
  • Medical Knowledge
  • Practice-based Learning and Improvement

Successful completion of this activity: You MUST COMPLETE all 3 stages to be awarded credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.
