Improving Clinical Practice with Patients who have Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD): Performance in Practice (PIP) and SA Activity
Welcome to the Improving Clinical Practice with Patients with Patients who have Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) Performance in Practice (PIP)  and Self-Assessment (SA) Activity.

We gratefully acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our faculty content developers, Shram Shukla, MD, Oluwole Jegede, MD, MPH, PhD, and Kevin Sevarino, MD, PhD, in crafting this educational material.

Target Audience: This activity is designed to improve the competence, performance, and patient outcomes of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals. Learners will determine individual practice gaps and address them through a performance improvement plan. Learners will assess and evaluate Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) performance techniques used in their practices.

Our goal: The overall objective of this activity is to guide you through the process of self-evaluation using evidence-based clinical quality measures. Once practices are implemented as an everyday clinical function, it is expected that you will have achieved performance change in your practice setting.

Educational objectives of this activity:

Through participation in this Performance in Practice activity, including assessment of individual practice gaps, development of a personal improvement plan, and re-evaluation following implementation, clinicians will be able to:

  1. Identify evidence-based screening tools and understand diagnosis for alcohol use disorder and alcohol withdrawal.
  2. Identify evidence-based first- and second-line medications for alcohol use disorder and compare their advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Identify evidence-based psychosocial treatments for alcohol use disorder.
  4. Define the standard clinical laboratory tests relevant to Alcohol Use Disorder and the use of medications for Alcohol Use Disorder.
Core Competencies as a result of participating in this continuing education activity:
  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication
