Kevin Johnson, MD

Kevin Johnson is a clinical professor of psychiatry at The Norton College of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical Center and a staff psychiatrist at the Pomeroy Addiction Treatment Center at Crouse Health. He has been evaluating and treating transgender, gender diverse, and nonbinary patients of all ages for over 10 years--having given lectures and talks on transgender health and wellness. He is one of the authors of the chapter on Substance Use Disorders in the recent publication "Gender-Affirming Psychiatric Care" available through APA Publishing. He also served as an editor and 10-year board member for "Trans Bodies Trans Selves: A Resource for the Transgender Community," the second edition of which was published by Oxford University Press in 2022. He is also a member of the WPATH (the World Professional Association for Transgender Health) and he works closely with a number of other gender-affirming clinicians in Central New York

 

Course Information
This presentation will help students of addiction psychiatry better understand psychotherapeutic approaches with transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse patients--especially when it applies to treating substance use disorders. Existing data suggest that transgender and gender-diverse individuals are three times more likely to report substance use. Why is this? and what can we do about it? After a brief review of terminology, this presentation will review the use of substances in transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) communities. It will cover known demographic data about different drugs of abuse, existing models of why substance use is higher in these populations--including biopsychosocial models of how addiction develops, unique issues regarding treatment and considerations for best practices, and future avenues for research.

  • Review the current data on different drugs of abuse and it's use in TGD communities.
  • Review existing models of why substance use disorders develop and apply it to marginalized populations
  • Understand the multifaced role that psychiatrists play in gender-affirming healthcare
  • Review medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and potential interractions with medications commonly used in gender-affirming care.
  • Acknowledge the troubled history that arose from conflicts between the field of psychiatry and the overall transgender rights movement and how that influences the doctor-patient relationship today
