Medical Update: Migraine Headaches Diagnosis and Treatment
Learning Objectives
  • Review how to identify/diagnose migraine.
  • Discuss evidence-based treatments for migraine, including injectable medications for the prevention of migraine, the use of Botox, and the newest medications for aborting headaches.
  • Discuss the relevant misuse or addictive potential of headache medications.
  • Review the diagnosis of medication overuse headache including concept of opioid-induced “rebound” headache and management.

Teshamae Monteith , MD

    

Dr. Teshamae Monteith is a Professor of Clinical Neurology and Chief of the Headache Division at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine/University of Miami Health System. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. As an undergraduate student, she participated in basic neuroscience research funded through the National Institute of Health’s Minority Biomedical Research Support program. She also worked as a peer educator to raise awareness and prevent intimate partner violence, which adversely impacts women, through the FIU Victim Advocacy Center. Dr. Monteith graduated from medical school at the University of Miami in 2004. While training, she developed an appreciation for the brain and an enthusiasm for the potential of clinical advances to reduce suffering. She went on to complete her neurology residency at the New York University School of Medicine in 2008. During her fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson University’s Jefferson Headache Center, she developed a comprehensive approach to headache management. Dr. Monteith pursued a second fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, from 2009 to 2011, where she was involved in research studies involving migraine and other headache disorders.


She has served on several advisory boards for migraine therapeutics and conducts several clinical trials in headache. She has been previously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) supplements to promote diversity in health-related research and work in migraine, stroke, and imaging biomarkers. She has published in a number of prominent journals in headache medicine and neurology and has lectured nationally on topics such as headache disorders and migraine. She has served as a peer reviewer for over 30 journals, in addition to federal grants, and has also given regional, national, and international lectures in migraine and other headache disorders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she joined the National Institutes of Health National COVID Cohort Collaborative.

She is President of the Florida Society of Neurology. As a result of her passion for training the next generation of specialists, Dr. Monteith became the founding chair of the New Investigator and Trainee Section of the American Headache Society and is currently the Co-Chair of the Leadership Development Committee. She was a member of the Board of Trustees for the International Headache Society (IHS) (2021-2023) and is the current Co-Chair of the Membership Committee.

Dr. Monteith is a graduate of the Public Voices fellowship and uses her voice to combat the burden of headache disorders, in which migraine alone is the 3rd most common condition. She is on the editorial board for the American Migraine Foundation and the American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) Brain and Life Magazine. She is also on the editorial board for the Neurology Journal and an associate editor for Cephalalgia. She is a senior host for the Neurology Podcast and the Neurology Minute. Dr. Monteith is the Associate Editor of the Continuum Audio podcast. She has been a guest editor for the New England Journal of Medicine Group and was featured in the Lancet Neurology’s Lifeline.

Dr. Monteith has been recognized as a Legacy South Florida Top Black Educator for her work educating and mentoring trainees and young physicians. She is a co-recipient of the American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Award (for her advocacy work with veterans returning with headache disorders), and the American Headache Society’s Wolff award. She is also a recipient of the Dean’s Diversity and Inclusion Award and FIU’s Torch Award.
