Overview and Learning Objectives

Overview

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that was developed to treat highly suicidal individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and has since been adapted for individuals with substance use disorders. The treatment integrates principles of behavioral science with those of Zen practice to provide a synthesis of change and acceptance both in terms of therapist strategies and new skills taught to clients. This talk will briefly outline the treatment targets and structure of DBT, discuss core strategies used in DBT, and highlight several DBT skills for addiction.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. List the DBT treatment targets.
  2. Describe the DBT treatment modes.
  3. Identify the core strategies used in DBT.
  4. Explain two DBT skills for managing addiction.
