Video Summary
The webinar “Practical Approaches: Sex, Bets, and Pixels” examines behavioral addictions and their relevance to addiction psychiatry. Speakers emphasize that excessive behavior alone does not establish addiction; assessment should focus on loss of control, persistence despite harm, and functional impairment. Gambling disorder is recognized in DSM-5-TR, while internet gaming disorder remains a condition for further study, and other behaviors have varying diagnostic status.

The presentation reviews gambling, gaming and internet use, compulsive buying, compulsive sexual behavior, and food addiction. Risk can reflect individual vulnerability, co-occurring conditions, social isolation, and environmental factors such as aggressive marketing and highly engaging digital platforms. Gambling warrants particular attention because of its association with suicide risk. Clinicians are encouraged to ask about behavioral addictions directly, use screening tools where appropriate, and assess safety and co-occurring psychiatric or substance-use disorders.

Psychotherapy—especially cognitive behavioral therapy, often combined with motivational interviewing—is a common evidence-supported approach. Group and peer support, family involvement, and mindfulness may also help. No medications are FDA-approved specifically for these behavioral addictions, though some treatments have shown preliminary benefit and may be considered alongside care for co-occurring conditions.

Three case discussions illustrate coordinated, individualized treatment: assessing gambling-related suicide risk and financial harm; addressing gaming, anxiety, and family and school dynamics together; and treating compulsive sexual behavior through nonjudgmental assessment and therapy focused on impaired control and reducing harm. The speakers also highlight stigma, limited treatment access, and gaps in screening and diagnostic systems.
