Pdf Summary
The document highlights the role of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in treating adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Amanda Spray, a Clinical Associate Professor and Psychologist, elaborates on the benefits of CBT as an adjunctive treatment alongside medication, especially for individuals who either cannot tolerate medication or prefer not to use it. With 6% of U.S. adults diagnosed with ADHD, of which many receive no treatment, CBT offers a structured approach to manage symptoms.

CBT is shown to significantly improve core ADHD symptoms, organizational skills, and self-esteem. Studies indicate that while CBT combined with medication offers immediate benefits, CBT alone yields ongoing improvements over time. Meta-analyses confirm that CBT is more effective than waiting lists or active control groups for reducing ADHD symptomatology and severity.

The therapy targets executive dysfunction and includes psychoeducation to help patients understand ADHD, addressing both cognitive (thought) and behavioural aspects. Techniques include time management strategies, cognitive restructuring to change negative thought patterns, and organizational systems for personal tasks. Group CBT provides social support, enhancing understanding and acceptance among participants.

Strategies like prioritizing tasks, using planners, and implementing regular sleep routines are encouraged. Behavioral interventions focus on overcoming procrastination and leveraging rewards for task completion. Cognitive restructuring helps identify and challenge negative automatic thoughts, providing alternative, more balanced perspectives to reduce emotional obstacles such as anxiety and depression.

Research supports the effectiveness of CBT both in combination with medication and as a standalone treatment in improving symptoms and managing comorbid conditions like anxiety and depression. Tools and techniques discussed are aimed at enhancing daily functioning and addressing the cognitive and emotional challenges faced by adults with ADHD.
