Psychedelic Treatments for Substance Use Disorder and Substance Misuse A Mixed Methods Systematic Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This mixed methods systematic review examined the effectiveness of psychedelic treatments for substance use disorder (SUD) and substance misuse. Seven studies on psilocybin, ibogaine, and ayahuasca were identified, which reported positive results for abstinence, substance use, psychological outcomes, craving, and withdrawal. However, more research is needed for specific substance use disorders. One study on psilocybin for alcohol use disorder found reduced drinking and increased self-efficacy to abstain. Another study on psilocybin for nicotine dependence showed 80% abstinence at 6 months. Ibogaine and ayahuasca-assisted therapy also showed positive effects. Qualitative data described enhanced self-awareness and confidence. The review recommends larger studies with longer-term follow-up to establish effectiveness and emphasizes the need for rigorous evaluation methods.
