Pdf Summary
The PCSS-MOUD (Providers Clinical Support System - Medications for Opioid Use Disorders) offers on-demand, evidence-based continuing education (CE) courses aimed at healthcare professionals to improve prevention and treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUD), particularly Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), including co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Funded by SAMHSA and led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, PCSS-MOUD seeks to enhance healthcare providers' knowledge and skills through interprofessional training that supports evidence-based practices in managing OUD, stimulant use disorders, and pain.

Between January and June 2025, PCSS-MOUD analyzed self-reported quantitative and qualitative evaluation data from nearly 140,000 course participants. The evaluation focused on whether participants planned to make practice changes, particularly in working with their clinical teams, and what specific changes were anticipated.

Findings showed that 84% of respondents intended to collaborate with their teams to implement practice changes related to substance use care. Key areas of planned improvements included advanced clinical care (28%), team communication (18%), and patient communication (17%). Participant responses identified five thematic areas of change, reflecting enhanced clinical practices informed by evidence-based treatment approaches.

Conclusively, PCSS-MOUD CE activities effectively facilitated healthcare providers’ self-identification of practical improvements, demonstrating the initiative’s success in promoting evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes for individuals at risk or suffering from OUD. The program contributes to addressing the opioid overdose crisis by equipping healthcare teams with the knowledge and confidence to advance prevention, treatment, and recovery services in real clinical settings.
