The Link Between Internet Gaming Disorder(IGD) and Adolescent Mental Health A Systematic Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This systematic review investigates the relationship between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and mental health outcomes in adolescents, a vulnerable group at risk for psychiatric comorbidities. Analyzing 22 studies with a total of 231,587 participants, strong evidence emerged linking IGD with depression, anxiety, suicidality, stress, ADHD symptoms, and sleep disturbances. The reported odds ratios indicate robust associations: depression (2.23-4.36), anxiety (1.53-3.85), suicidality (1.72-2.42), and stress (1.51-2.25). ADHD symptoms and sleep disturbances were also consistently related to IGD, primarily identified through qualitative data. Key mediators influencing these relationships include maladaptive cognitions, low resilience, poor coping skills, impulsivity, social isolation, and poor sleep hygiene often tied to late-night gaming.

The review underscores the importance of screening adolescents for IGD and its associated psychiatric conditions to enable integrated and evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies. However, current evidence is predominantly derived from cross-sectional, self-reported studies, which limits conclusions about causality. The findings highlight critical gaps in research, including the need for longitudinal and cross-cultural studies to better understand the temporal nature of IGD’s impact on mental health.

Overall, IGD poses a significant public health concern for adolescent mental health due to its strong associations with various psychiatric issues. Future research should prioritize clarifying causal pathways and developing tailored clinical and policy responses to address IGD and its mental health consequences effectively.
