Pdf Summary
This systematic review examines the mental health impacts of excessive screen use among adolescents, a trend heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on data from nine studies encompassing 18,047 adolescents, the review identifies a significant association between prolonged screen exposure—particularly social media and video gaming—and various negative outcomes including disrupted sleep, decreased physical activity, social isolation, academic challenges, anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems. The review also notes that excessive screen time may adversely affect neurodevelopment areas related to attention, decision-making, and impulse control.

The authors highlight that while screen use correlates with internalizing problems and social difficulties, family and community influences often have a stronger effect on adolescent mental health than screen time alone. The pandemic’s role in increasing screen exposure underscores the urgency of understanding these relationships.

Methodologically, the review employed a PRISMA flow diagram process to identify relevant studies, although much of the existing evidence relies on cross-sectional and self-reported data, which limits causal inferences. The review further considers social and cultural factors shaping screen addiction and discusses the impact of the pandemic on screen behavior patterns.

Promisingly, school-based interventions show potential for mitigating risks associated with excessive screen use, but the authors call for longitudinal and cross-cultural research to better establish causality and to develop targeted, evidence-based strategies. Overall, this review underscores the complex interplay between screen use and adolescent mental health, advocating for nuanced approaches that consider broader familial and societal contexts to promote healthier technology engagement.
