Retrospective Analysis of Predictors for Rehab Completion at Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This retrospective quality improvement study at Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center analyzed 125 inpatient rehab patients admitted in early 2024 to identify predictors of rehabilitation completion. Among these, 66 patients completed rehab while 59 did not. The majority (58.4%) had Alcohol Use Disorder as their primary diagnosis. Sociodemographic factors including age, race, and housing status showed no significant differences between completers and non-completers.

Key findings revealed that cannabis use was significantly more common in patients who did not complete rehab (64.4% vs. 45.5%; p=0.034). Additionally, a history of violence was notably more prevalent among non-completers (18.6% vs. 4.5%; p=0.013). Logistic regression identified history of violence as an independent predictor of early termination from rehab (odds ratio 0.21, p=0.02). Other variables such as other substance use, prior rehab admissions, trauma, incarceration, psychiatric hospitalization, and psychiatric treatment showed no significant differences.

These results contrast with prior research linking early termination to social determinants like age, race, and financial status. Here, violence history emerged as the primary risk factor for dropout, underscoring the specific needs of this patient population. The study suggests that screening for violence history upon admission could help identify patients at risk for early termination and guide targeted interventions.

In conclusion, cannabis use and past violence are associated with lower rehab completion rates at this center, highlighting areas for clinical focus. Future research is recommended to develop strategies that improve retention for patients with violent histories in substance use treatment programs. This study contributes to understanding population-specific predictors of treatment engagement, which can inform tailored approaches in inpatient rehabilitation settings.
