Pdf Summary
This retrospective study examined predictors of detoxification (detox) completion among 139 patients admitted to an inpatient detox unit between January and March 2024. The sample was predominantly male (80.6%) with an average age of 47.2 years. Overall, 72.7% (101/139) completed detox.

Significant factors associated with detox completion on bivariate analyses included older age, undomiciled status, receiving psychiatric treatment during detox, and history of psychotic disorder. However, logistic regression identified only older age (p=0.042) and receiving psychiatric treatment during detox (p=0.029) as independent predictors. Notably, sex, insurance type, trauma history, and other psychiatric diagnoses were not significantly linked to completion.

The finding that patients undergoing psychiatric treatment were more likely to complete detox suggests benefits from addressing comorbid psychiatric conditions during detox. Additionally, undomiciled patients had higher completion rates, highlighting an opportunity to better engage this marginalized group. Younger patients were less likely to complete detox.

The study contextualizes detox outcomes amid the broader U.S. substance use disorder (SUD) landscape: in 2023, 48.5 million Americans met criteria for SUDs, though only 23.6% received treatment. Co-occurring mental illness is common, with 20.4 million Americans affected by both SUD and psychiatric disorders. Overdose deaths continue to rise, with an estimated 80,391 fatalities in 2024. Detox completion rates vary widely in literature (45-94%) and completion is critical for transitioning patients to further treatment.

Future analyses will include transitions from detox to rehabilitation, rehab completion rates, readmission rates, and detailed evaluation of psychiatric treatments provided during detox. Overall, this study underscores the importance of integrating psychiatric care during detox to improve completion rates and engagement among vulnerable populations.
