Pdf Summary
This study explores the prevalence of substance use disorders among hospitalized patients with Tourette’s syndrome in the United States, using data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for 2016 and 2017. Tourette’s syndrome has been previously linked to substance abuse, but comprehensive national studies focusing on hospital settings were lacking.

The NIS, which is a nationally representative database covering approximately 20% of U.S. community hospitals, was utilized to gather hospitalization data. Specifically, the study used the ICD-10 code “F952” to identify adult patients aged 18 and older diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome. In total, the database contained around 60.6 million hospitalizations, out of which 12,785 (or 0.02%) involved patients with Tourette’s syndrome. The demographic data indicated that the majority of these patients were males (69.3%) and white (86%), with a mean age of 43.5 years.

The study conducted chi-square tests to determine the prevalence of co-existing substance use disorders among these patients, finding statistically significant higher prevalence rates of substance use disorders in patients with Tourette’s syndrome compared to those without it. Specifically, rates were higher across various substances, including nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, opioids, and others, with all p-values being less than 0.0001.

The results emphasize the need for systematic screening for substance use disorders in hospitalized patients with Tourette’s syndrome. The study suggests a multidisciplinary approach involving mental health professionals and social workers to counsel and provide resources to these individuals, addressing the notable risk of substance abuse in this patient population. The study supports the findings of previous research on Tourette’s syndrome and substance use but offers new insights by providing population-based data in a hospital setting.
