Pdf Summary
This study examined the impact of online education on knowledge, confidence, and intention to implement substance use prevention among primary care clinicians (PCCs) six months after training. Given significant increases in alcohol use disorder mortality and related substance use issues, there's a pressing need for effective education on screening and intervention in primary care settings.

The study involved an asynchronous online education program for PCCs across Texas, focusing on substance use disorder (SUD) screenings, brief interventions (SBI), and treatment. Participants were invited to complete additional detailing workshops post-education. Six months later, a follow-up survey evaluated their retention of knowledge, confidence in providing SBI, and intention to implement SUD treatment.

Results showed that while there were improvements in knowledge and confidence, gaps remained, particularly concerning standard drinking behaviors and nicotine use disorder treatments. Those who participated in both online education and detailing sessions showed more significant improvements compared to those who only participated online. The detailing group had higher rates of correct responses regarding the use of evidence-based screening tools and first-line medication for tobacco cessation, among others.

Confidence scores were generally higher for the detailing group, suggesting that this supplemental training can enhance self-assurance in screening and treating SUDs. However, detailing sessions were noted to be time-intensive, limiting scalability. Therefore, alternative supplemental learning methods might be more beneficial for broader implementation.

In conclusion, while online education paired with detailing showed promising results, ongoing education strategies may need refinements to cover persistent knowledge gaps and to make supplemental learning more accessible and effective. This research underscores the critical role of continued education in enhancing the capacity of PCCs to address substance use disorders effectively.
