Pdf Summary
This study aims to analyze the existing literature on the use of xylazine among perinatal individuals with opioid use disorder. Xylazine is commonly found in recreational heroin and fentanyl and can worsen the effects of injection drug use. It is known to have adverse cardiovascular complications and can cause skin ulcerations. This study highlights the lack of understanding regarding the prevalence, use, and physiological effects of xylazine among pregnant individuals.

The researchers initially identified 275 relevant studies using specific keywords. After screening the titles and abstracts, 49.8% of these studies were deemed suitable for full-text review. Interestingly, none of the included studies described xylazine in their methodology, while all of them discussed non-xylazine opioid use. Data extraction has not yet taken place, but the authors outline the next steps in the research process.

The analysis reveals the limited literature available on the implications of xylazine use during pregnancy and childbirth. This scarcity highlights a gap in communication between public health and research pipelines. The authors emphasize the importance of understanding the rise of xylazine-laced products, as they lack reversal agents. The unique physiological challenges posed by pregnancy and drug injection further amplify concerns about the impact of xylazine on vulnerable birthing individuals.

The authors suggest that decision-making models at policy levels should address the increasing use of xylazine among opioid users. They also advocate for enhanced data entry systems that include reporting on xylazine and demographic information such as pregnancy and perinatal status. Future studies should examine the physiological implications of xylazine use during pregnancy and the perinatal period.

The PRISMA analysis process was used in this study, with search strategies developed in consultation with a medical librarian. Various databases were searched, and specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. The next steps in the research process include data extraction and synthesis.

The primary author acknowledges the Sexual Health and Reproductive Equity Engagement Collaborative of ECU for their support of this project.
