Pdf Summary
Emory Healthcare has created the Emory Addiction Training Team to address the issue of opioid-related adverse outcomes. The team consists of seven interdisciplinary members and provides training sessions based on specialty. The goal is to educate providers on safe opioid prescribing, the use of naloxone, and medications for addiction treatment.

The results of the initiative aim to decrease mortality associated with opioid use disorder. In 2021, over 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, mostly attributed to opioids. However, despite knowing that medications for opioid use disorder decrease mortality, fewer than one-third of people who suffer a non-fatal opioid overdose receive these medications the following year.

The team is focused on improving harm reduction strategies throughout the institution. Internal data indicates that a small subset of providers prescribe the majority of naloxone, especially in geriatric patients. This suggests a need for provider education on naloxone prescribing, particularly in surgical specialties. Additionally, the team aims to reduce opioid-related adverse events by providing training and education on safe opioid prescribing.

The methods employed include analyzing internal data from October 2022 to April 2023 to identify departments and specialties that would benefit from education on addiction and safe opioid practices. The team also calculated rates of naloxone prescribing by specialty. Additionally, data from the Vizient Clinical Data Base from September 2021 to May 2023 was used to identify trends in naloxone prescribing among Emory affiliated hospitals.

The specialties with the highest rates of naloxone prescribing included emergency medicine, family medicine, and surgery. By understanding these prescribing patterns, the Emory Addiction Training Team aims to target these specialties for education and intervention.

Overall, the Emory Addiction Training Team is implementing strategies to improve provider education and ultimately save patient lives by addressing the opioid crisis and reducing opioid-related adverse outcomes.
