Back to course
Pdf Summary
This collaboration focuses on the disparities in tobacco treatment engagement among low-income Californians with substance use and psychiatric diagnoses. The study finds that low-income Californians are more likely to smoke, have lower quit success rates, and have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The study examines the effectiveness of specialty mental health and substance use clinics compared to primary care clinics in delivering tobacco treatment.

The study found that updating the electronic health record resulted in a 48% increase in patients referred to behavioral treatments, but did not have an impact on the prescription of pharmacotherapy. Substance use and mental health treatment specialists were more likely to prescribe tobacco treatments than primary care providers. Patients diagnosed with methamphetamine use and those using multiple substances were the most referred for behavioral treatment.

The study also analyzed the demographic data of active smokers and found that the majority were White, followed by Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Other races. In terms of sexual orientation, the majority identified as heterosexual, followed by no report, other, homosexual, and bisexual.

The study concludes that by enhancing electronic health record workflows, more low-income patients with substance and mental health diagnoses can be engaged in tobacco treatment. It emphasizes the importance of specialty clinics in providing effective tobacco treatment for this population.
