Pdf Summary
This qualitative study explores the experiences of providers delivering collaborative care in the CLARO trial, which compares the effectiveness of Collaborative Care versus usual care for patients with Opioid Use Disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions. The study aims to identify themes that are relevant to future dissemination efforts of the Collaborative Care model. Interviews were conducted with physicians, care coordinators, behavioral health providers, and administrators involved in the CLARO intervention.

The results highlight the benefits of collaborative care for patients with co-occurring disorders. Providers find that it improves team communication and service delivery for these complex patients. The collaborative care model enhances reassurance, engagement, risk reduction, rapid intervention, and management of complex treatment plans for patients. It also allows providers to work at the top of their licensure, ensures timely and safe care, and facilitates sharing of expertise among team members. However, clinic-level and state policy-level changes are needed to support the adoption and sustainability of collaborative care.

The study also identifies differences between patients with co-occurring disorders and those without. Patients with co-occurring disorders have more complex and severe illness, are more difficult to engage and retain in care, and require more complex treatment courses.

Overall, the findings suggest that collaborative care has a positive impact on both patients and providers. The study provides insights into the implementation of collaborative care in the CLARO trial and highlights the need for further research and policy changes to support the widespread adoption of this approach.
