Pdf Summary
A study conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio investigated the impact of naloxone education on healthcare students' knowledge and response to opioid overdose. The study found that a one-hour naloxone training significantly increased participants' ability to identify and respond to an opioid overdose. The mean assessment scores increased by 25.56%, and confidence in identifying and responding to an overdose rose from less than 20% to over 95%. These findings suggest that naloxone education and training should be incorporated into healthcare training curriculum to address the opioid crisis.

The study also highlighted the need for standardized opioid overdose education and naloxone training in health professional school curriculum. It was found that resources for naloxone education are underutilized due to a lack of awareness and formal education in many health profession settings. The study recommends increasing the number of naloxone trainings for health profession students and training incoming students to be trainers to ensure program sustainability.

The study used Operation Naloxone, a one-hour training program offered via Zoom, to deliver the naloxone education. A pre-training survey and post-training survey were conducted to assess participants' knowledge and confidence. Naloxone was distributed to participants after the training.

From 2009 to 2019, opioid overdose deaths increased by 144%, highlighting the urgency to address the opioid crisis. The study concludes that naloxone education in healthcare training curriculum is crucial in equipping healthcare students to act as first responders to opioid overdose. Recommendations include incorporating overdose education and naloxone distribution into health profession curriculum and collaborating with student organizations and student-run clinics to offer naloxone trainings to at-risk populations.

Overall, the study emphasizes the positive impact of naloxone education on healthcare students' knowledge and confidence in responding to opioid overdose and highlights the importance of implementing naloxone education in healthcare training.
