Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the adoption of pain management guidelines by providers after completing an adaptive learning CME course. The course, based on the FDA Blueprint, consisted of 62 case-based questions. A total of 372 responses were received from CME completers, representing an 11% response rate. Most respondents were physicians (76%), followed by PAs, Nurse Practitioners, and Pharmacists.

The study found that 65% of learners reported practice change after completing the CME course. The most commonly reported barriers to change were patient resistance (36%), lack of access to multi-modal treatment (21%), and lack of time (14%). The study suggested that a self-paced, adaptive learning platform facilitated practice change and emphasized the importance of funding, such as the FDA REMS grant, in improving patient safety and preventing opioid use disorder.

While there is a willingness to improve pain care, barriers such as inadequate access to multi-modal treatment, patient stigma, and time constraints during patient encounters hinder practice change. The study recommended that health system leaders, policy makers, and clinicians address these barriers to implement current standards of care and ensure safe opioid prescribing.

The study had limitations, including selection bias and recall bias. The small sample size and self-reported results may have influenced the findings, and participants' ability to recall the CME and practice changes may have affected the accuracy of the reported effects. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to evaluate these effects.

In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of continuing education and adaptive learning platforms in facilitating practice change and improving patient safety in pain management. However, barriers such as patient resistance, limited access to multi-modal treatment, and time constraints need to be addressed to ensure the implementation of evidence-based guidelines.
