Pdf Summary
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between recreational ketamine use and depressive symptoms among high school seniors. The researchers analyzed data from the 2016-2019 Monitoring the Future survey, which included a sample of 15,673 high school seniors. They compared the prevalence of depression among those who reported past-year use of various drugs. The researchers used multivariable generalized linear models to calculate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and control for demographic characteristics.

The results showed that recreational ketamine use was associated with the highest risk for reporting current depression, followed by marijuana use and non-medical use of tranquilizers and amphetamines. On the other hand, alcohol use was associated with a decreased risk of depressive symptoms.

Furthermore, the study found that more frequent use of ketamine and marijuana was associated with an increased risk of high levels of depressive symptoms in a dose-response-like manner. Past-year use of ketamine and marijuana more than 10 times was associated with a 70% and 40% increase in depressive symptoms, respectively.

This study is the first nationally representative study to evaluate the extent of recreational ketamine use among adolescents reporting depressive symptoms. The findings highlight the need for more research to understand the temporal associations between recreational ketamine use and depressive symptoms, considering the high prevalence of depression and illegal drug use among adolescents.

The project was funded by the National Institutes of Health, and the authors are affiliated with various institutions including the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and the Department of Population Health at New York University Grossman School of Medicine.
