Pdf Summary
Opioid overdose deaths are a major contributor to the decline in life expectancy in the U.S., and populations with lower socioeconomic status are particularly vulnerable to Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). This study aimed to explore the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the distribution of Active Waivered Providers (providers who have prescribed opioids within a certain period) in 2020. The study utilized data from Symphony Data, CDC, and USDA to analyze the number of waivered providers, socioeconomic factors, and county-level statistics.

The results showed that counties with high poverty rates had a lower number of waivered providers compared to counties with low poverty rates. Similarly, counties with low levels of bachelor's degree completion had fewer waivered providers compared to counties with high completion rates. Additionally, counties with high unemployment rates had fewer waivered providers compared to counties with low unemployment rates. These trends were consistent even when comparing the top counties in each socioeconomic category.

This study highlights the importance of understanding disadvantaged populations and identifying areas that require more attention in terms of OUD treatment access. The findings suggest that regions with high poverty, high unemployment, or low education rates have lower distribution of waivered providers for OUD treatment. Further research is needed to better understand the socioeconomic marginalization related to treatment access in these areas.

Overall, this study emphasizes the need to consider socioeconomic factors in addressing the ongoing issue of OUD in the U.S. It provides valuable insights into the distribution of waivered providers and identifies areas where more focus is needed to improve access to treatment for OUD.
