Pdf Summary
Nicotine Use Disorder (NUD) is the most common substance use disorder in the United States, with a prevalence of 18%. Tobacco use disproportionately affects individuals with mental illness, especially those with psychiatric illnesses. Despite 69% of smokers wanting to quit, only 48% received advice to quit from a health professional. Psychiatrists have often minimized, normalized, and rationalized tobacco use among their patients.

While smoking rates have declined overall, the same trend has not been seen among Hispanics. The impact of smoking cessation campaigns has been less effective among the Hispanic population. Mexicans and Central/South Americans have experienced a smaller decrease in heavy smoking compared to Whites.

Hispanic smokers are less likely to receive quitting advice from health professionals compared to their White counterparts. However, there is overwhelming evidence that quitting tobacco use has significant benefits for mental health and quality of life. It can reduce the severity of anxiety, depression, and stress, and increase the likelihood of achieving sobriety from other substances.

Smoking rates vary among Hispanic subgroups. Puerto Rican and Cuban men have higher rates of smoking prevalence compared to non-Hispanic Whites, while Dominican and South American men have rates well below the national average. Mexican and Central American men have smoking rates comparable to non-Hispanic men.

It is important to disaggregate Hispanic subgroups when considering tobacco use disorder and not treat Hispanics as a single ethnic group. Smoking rates among Hispanics should be addressed with targeted and culturally appropriate strategies to ensure equal benefit from anti-tobacco measures.

Reference:
Martinez Garza, D.
