Pdf Summary
A study conducted on outpatient women with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in a telemedicine MOUD clinic revealed a high rate of unplanned pregnancies, potentially as high as 90%. These women are also at risk for adverse outcomes such as termination, stillbirth, premature labor, and involvement with social services. The study aimed to determine the rate and type of contraception used among females treated with Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and how frequently MOUD providers identify contraception usage. The study also aimed to identify other unique challenges faced by women taking MOUD.

The results showed that birth control status was assessed at the initial appointment in only 35.7% of women. In 50% of women, the status was never addressed. Surgical sterilization was performed in three women due to medical reasons other than contraception. Nearly half of the women had comorbid Substance Use Disorders (SUD), and the majority had comorbid psychiatric illnesses. There were no statistical differences found regarding psychiatric or SUD comorbidities.

The study concludes that the initial appointments for women taking MOUD present opportunities to address contraception status and prevent unplanned pregnancies. Many of these women do not use highly effective contraception methods or use no contraception at all. Given that some of these patients may not see healthcare providers outside of their MOUD visits, it is crucial to assess and provide education on highly effective contraception methods during these appointments to prevent unintended pregnancies and their negative consequences. However, it is important to note that this study had a small sample size, and further research is needed to replicate these results.

References:
1. Heil SH, Jones HE, Arria A, et al.
