Measurement Based Care in Behavioral Health and Substance Use

Pdf Summary
Measurement-based care (MBC) is an approach that improves patient outcomes in behavioral health settings by identifying problems early and monitoring symptom severity. However, MBC is uncommon in behavioral health and substance use disorder (SUD) clinics, leading to overlooked issues. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) is a reliable framework that can help identify factors impacting MBC implementation and improve clinical care in behavioral health settings.

To examine the implementation of MBC, six focus groups and seven individual interviews were conducted with stakeholders from behavioral health and SUD clinics. The participants expressed varying thoughts and beliefs about the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in these clinics. Substance use clinic stakeholders were more receptive to PROMs, particularly when it came to general climate receptivity. However, certain providers, such as psychologists, who do not regularly use computerized PROMs, were less receptive. On the other hand, stakeholders from behavioral health clinics, at all levels, expressed less receptiveness to completing PROMs.

The stakeholders from both clinic types agreed that design quality and packaging of PROMs, such as a user-friendly interface, were facilitators. However, SUD clinic staff noted limited session time as a barrier. Therefore, addressing specific clinic needs is crucial when implementing MBC.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of implementing MBC and addressing implementation barriers and facilitators in both behavioral health and SUD clinics. By using validated frameworks like CFIR, clinics can enhance patient care and outcomes.
