Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate provider-reported practice change 3-4 months after completing an adaptive learning CME course on pain management guidelines. The course was based on the FDA Blueprint and funded by the FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy. A total of 372 responses were received from learners who completed the CME evaluation. Most respondents were from the US, and physicians were the most commonly represented profession.

The study found that 65% of learners reported implementing changes to their practice as a result of the CME course. The most commonly implemented FDA guidelines were patient-centered pain management and choosing the best opioid for pain control. The top three barriers to change reported by clinicians were patient resistance, lack of access to multi-modal treatment, and lack of time.

The findings suggest that a self-paced, adaptive learning platform can facilitate practice change and improve patient safety in the context of opioid use disorder (OUD). However, there were limitations to the study, including selection bias, recall bias, potential confounding, and limited generalizability.

The authors recommend that health system leaders, policy makers, and clinicians use the study's results to support safe opioid prescribing practices and address barriers to implementing current standards of care. They also emphasize the importance of REMS funding in improving patient safety and preventing OUD-related deaths.

Overall, this study contributes to understanding provider perceptions and practice changes related to pain management guidelines, highlighting the need for ongoing education and support in this critical area of healthcare.
