Addiction Specialists’ Attitudes toward Psychedelics A National
Back to course
Pdf Summary
A national survey was conducted to assess the attitudes of addiction specialists towards psychedelics. The survey included questions about the therapeutic potential, risks, and acceptability of psychedelics, as well as opinions on legalization and familiarity with the scientific literature. The survey received 145 responses from addiction specialists, with a majority being male and psychiatrists. The results showed that, contrary to expectations, addiction specialists expressed positive attitudes towards the therapeutic use of psychedelics. The majority believed that psychedelics hold promise in treating psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders. Concerns about the addictive potential of psychedelics were expressed by 37.9% of participants. The survey also revealed that addiction specialists believed therapeutic psychedelics should be administered in highly controlled and protocolized settings with specially-trained providers. Additionally, they expressed support for the legalization of therapeutic psychedelics, although opinions varied on whether they should be allowed in varied contexts and following indigenous/spiritual traditions. A majority of respondents believed that their patients would be interested in using psychedelics to treat substance use disorders. The survey identified a need for further research to distinguish attitudes towards different types of psychedelics, attitudes towards alternative settings for psychedelic-assisted therapy, and patient attitudes towards psychedelic therapy for substance use disorders. The study had some limitations, including a small sample size and selection bias. Overall, the survey suggests that addiction specialists have positive attitudes towards the therapeutic use of psychedelics and support their legalization under regulated conditions.
