Pdf Summary
The study titled "A Stage Ia Behavioral Treatment Development Trial of 'Recovering Safety: A Women's Empowerment Group for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence with Substance Use Disorders'" aimed to develop an intervention manual for the Recovering Safety group and examine patient satisfaction and changes in PTSD symptoms, safety perception, and empowerment. The study included 8 women with intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use disorders (SUDs). The treatment manual was revised based on expert feedback, and participants completed surveys at baseline, mid-group (4 weeks), and post-group (8 weeks).

The results showed high satisfaction with the group, with an average satisfaction score of 45.4 out of 48. The average number of group sessions attended was 6.3. From baseline to post-group, 6 out of 8 participants reported an increase in empowerment and defining safety goals, as well as a reduction in PTSD symptoms.

The study had limitations, including a small sample size and a sample consisting mainly of white, heterosexual individuals with high educational attainment. However, the results supported initial satisfaction with the Recovering Safety group and suggested improvements in PTSD symptoms for participants.

The demographic characteristics of the participants included an average age of 43.9, all participants identifying as white, non-Hispanic or Latinx, and heterosexual. Most participants had graduated from college and were employed full-time. The average Danger Assessment Score, measuring the risk of intimate partner violence, was 11.6.

The study was funded by the Sarles Young Investigator Award at McLean Hospital and the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Overall, the Recovering Safety group showed promising results in increasing empowerment and reducing PTSD symptoms for women survivors of IPV with SUDs.
