Pdf Summary
The Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) program, established by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), provides a unique framework for accrediting organizations that offer educational activities across multiple healthcare professions. Initiated in 2009, this cohesive system supports designing and delivering interprofessional education with unified standards and a simplified accreditation process.

The framework has expanded to include multiple health professions, such as those for athletic trainers, dentists, dietitians, optometrists, physician associates, psychologists, and social workers. The focus remains on improving healthcare quality and patient outcomes by fostering collaboration among diverse healthcare professionals through education that reflects and addresses the professional practice gaps of the healthcare team. Learning strategies emphasize collaboration, ethics, communication, and team performance, aiming to change skills, strategies, and patient outcomes.

Providers seeking accreditation must demonstrate a history of such interdisciplinary planning and effective outcomes. The accreditation process involves a comprehensive review over approximately 13 months, considering an organization's commitment to continuous professional development and educational effectiveness. Accreditation decisions are made collectively by the ACCME, ACPE, and ANCC, supported by a stringent fee structure based on the size of the education program.

Additionally, Joint Accreditation offers a Commendation track, which recognizes organizations demonstrating outstanding practices in IPCE. Criteria for Commendation requires providers to innovate and document significant contributions to medical education, with an option to achieve a longer, six-year accreditation term. The overarching goal of the Joint Accreditation initiative is to ensure that accredited educational activities align with the best practices in healthcare, thereby fostering improved patient care outcomes through efficient and strategic interprofessional collaboration.
